I will briefly discuss a few chronic conditions that may affect the ability to walk for wellness.
The most important to recognize is shortness of breath or lightheadedness. This is ideally managed with your doctor.
Secondly mechanical pain which arises only with loading when walking such as hip, knee and back pains need appropriate diagnosis and monitoring.
If the condition is chronic and managed appropriately, using the receptive steps 1 and 2 of this wellness algorithm, that is creating an intention, choosing and listening to music can be extremely beneficial. This can be done alone or in a group. One may choose a Tai chi playlist on Spotify for free or join a wellness class and practice at home with your own music.
For mood related problems related to grief or anxiety, using the entire algorithm is best. Both receptive activities such as creating a playlist, listening and creating your own music as well as more active walking in the community or in nature are helpful. Sharing your experience even if it is only to yourself on your own phone and creating your own stories even if it is only in your imagination may be as healing as the physical walk.
